R4R Attendance Policy

Ready 4 Residency (R4R) Attendance Policy

Attendance is required for all R4R activities, including the online component.

Once you receive the final schedule and your team assignment (determined and provided on the first day of class), please pay extra attention to the times of these sessions.

R4R is subject to P&S Absence Policy (https://www.ps.columbia.edu/education/student-resources/honor-code-and-policies/school-and-university-policies/attendance-and) and students will receive an Incomplete in R4R if (s)he misses more than 20% of the course (includes 2 excused and 2 unexcused absences).

ACLS/BCLS Certifcation

Certification for ACLS/BCLS is now included as part of the R4R curriculum. If you miss the beginning of R4R, it is possible that you may not be able to obtain ACLS and BLS Provider cards.

Approval for all absences is at the discretion of the course director.

  • Excused Absences: Students may be absent for an acute illness, a personal crisis (e.g. death in the family), a first-author presentation at a scientific conference, or a religious observance as described in the Columbia University Regulation on Religious Holidays. As soon as they are able, students must notify Dr. Rachel Gordon (rj216@cumc.columbia.edu) and copy the course coordinator at (pselectives@cumc.columbia.edu).
  • Unexcused Absences: Students can miss 2 days of class (~8 class hours) without penalty as long as (s)he does not miss more than one TBL, more than one FCM workshop (usually Thursday mornings), or more than one Simulation session. Not meeting these requirements and/or missing more than 2 unexcused days will result in an Incomplete. Having more than 4 absences total will result in an Incomplete.
  • Simulation and Skills: If a student will miss a Simulation or Skills session for any reason, please contact the course director in advance.
  • Global Health Electives/Vacation/Traveling: Do not book any flights or make other travel arrangements you cannot change without ensuring that you will meet the attendance requirements of the course----the course director will not change the course requirements due to immutable travel plans.
  • Weddings and Graduations: The course directors may allow a brief absence for a wedding in which the student plays a significant role or a graduation of a close family member, but is not obligated to do so. In all such cases, students must email course director and coordinator well in advance.
