USMLE Registration Step 1

Step 1 Registration

Registering for USMLE Step 1 is a multi-step process. This process has been altered from prior classes, so please read carefully. 

What you’ll need To Register For USMLE Step 1:

  • Social Security Number
  • Visa / Mastercard number and expiration date
  • 2 x 2 photo of yourself

How to Register For USMLE Step 1:

Registration Process (subject to change):

·      Click "first-time user" at NBME Licensing Examination Services (Links to an external site.).​

·      Enter your information​

·      Enter your name as it will appear on the identification card you intend to bring with you to the test​

·      NBME will email an ID number & temporary password. Write down your USMLE ID# somewhere for reference. Login to the NBME Licensing Examination Services  (Links to an external site) with the temporary password. Click Apply for USMLE.

·      Skim the first page, check the box at the bottom of the page (Check this box to certify …therein), and click NEXT.

·      Follow the instructions, and have a Visa/Mastercard ready for the 2022 $645 registration fee.​

·      Print the Certification page. ​

·      Affix the photo to the form and check the appropriate box above the signature field at the bottom before signing.​

·      Sign the form MANUALLY- NOT WITH A DIGITAL SIGNATURE​

USMLE Certification of ID:

Applications should be completely filled out by the student and include the student photo and handwritten signature.

·      Send a digital copy of your completed form for certification to the Columbia Medical Center Registrar's Office (cumc-rfs@columbia.edu). You do NOT need to appear in person at the Registrar to certify the form as students did in prior years.

Once your registration is complete, you will receive further instructions by email from NBME on how to access your scheduling permit online so you can schedule your test day and center at the Prometric website

·      Decide where you will study and where you would like to take the exam​

·      Choose a tentative exam date- this can be altered and may need to change as a result of external circumstances
