Scheduling: Elective Planning & Rank Scheduling Guidance
Waitlist-Only Courses
Some electives are designated as waitlist-only and are not included in the monthly rank scheduling process. After the rank scheduling period closes for the month, you can add yourself to the waitlist for these courses. To understand how the waitlist works, review the "Waiting List" instructions in the OASIS course catalog.
Back-Ups
We recommend ranking as many courses as you're genuinely interested in each month. There’s no limit to how many courses you can rank. Listing multiple options increases your chances of receiving your top choice in your preferred time frame.
Ranking Preferences
If there’s a specific course you really want, rank it #1 for each month until you’re scheduled into it. Just remember to include additional courses as back-ups each time, in case that course isn’t available yet.
Subinternships
If you’re planning to take a subinternship between March and June, we suggest prioritizing it consistently in your rankings—especially for non-waitlist options.
You’ll also have the chance to select July–September subinternships during the April rank scheduling round.
Internal Medicine subinternship placements are handled separately and coordinated by Dr. Lauren Mautner Rin. You’ll receive a preferences survey from her during the first week of January.
Because spots in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics sub-Is are limited, students may take up to one Medicine and one Pediatrics sub-I at NYP or affiliated hospitals between March and September.
We understand these early spots are popular. If you’re not assigned one in the first half of the year, we’ll work closely with you to help schedule one during the summer months.
Exploring Multiple Specialties
If you’re still deciding between specialties, consider ranking electives in more than one area of interest during each scheduling cycle.
For example, if you're choosing between Medicine and Pediatrics, you might rank Medicine electives for March, then Pediatrics for April.
This helps increase your scheduling flexibility and gives you early exposure to different fields for decision-making.
Scholarly Projects
If you’re planning time for a scholarly project, these can be found under the “Scholarly Projects” department in the OASIS course catalog.
-
SP Month 1 is waitlist-based and requires mentor confirmation.
-
Additional SP months require proposal approval and are also waitlisted.
Because of this, scholarly projects are not part of rank scheduling.
Interviews
You may take up to two months for residency interviews. One month is required during the D&I phase, typically within the main interview season (November–January, depending on specialty).
Board Prep Months
All students will be automatically enrolled in Board Prep for January, February, and March.
If you’d like to take an elective in January or February instead, just submit a request through UserVoice by:
-
November 30 for January
-
December 31 for February
For March electives, you’ll need to drop Board Prep before adding your course preferences during rank scheduling. If needed, you can reschedule Board Prep for another month.
Self-Arranged Electives
f you’re setting up a research project or preceptorship on your own, you’ll need to follow an approval process in addition to enrolling in OASIS.
