NPI General Information

1. What is an NPI?

An NPI (National Provider Identifier) is a unique 10-digit identification number assigned to healthcare providers. You will use this identifier throughout your medical training and professional career.

Important: Apply for only one NPI. Once assigned, your NPI will remain with you throughout your medical career.

2. Why do I need an NPI as a medical student?

An NPI may be required for clinical training, hospital onboarding, electronic health record access, residency applications, and other professional activities. Obtaining one now can help avoid delays later in your training.
