FAQ’s: Clerkships at Bassett Health Care
How Do I Get to Bassett?
For Surgery:
Most students travel via bus (http://www.trailwaysny.com/html/english/fares.asp, 1-800-776-7548) direct from NYC to Cooperstown. The Surgery clerkship is located at the hospital therefore a car is not needed for day to day clerkship activities. If students choose to drive their own cars or rent a car for transportation between NYC and Cooperstown, they are asked to travel together and there are limits to what is reimbursed. For more information about this, please be in touch with the Surgery Clerkship Coordinator.
For Primary Care:
You should receive an email from the Primary Care clerkship coordinator regarding a car rental 2 weeks prior to the start of your clerkship. Due to the rural location of the Primary Care sites, a Hertz rental car will be reserved for you and will be available to you throughout your clerkship. Reimbursement will be provided for gas expenses.
What expenses will be reimbursed?
We will reimburse for bus fare or car rental/gas. Please save your receipts and submit a Uservoice ticket with your receipts attached at the end of the clerkship. Once processed, you can expect these funds within 2-3 weeks.
What amenities are included with housing at Bassett?
Housing at Bassett is centrally located around the campus with only 3 to 4 minute walk to the entrance of the hospital. It includes most everything you will need to stay here, utensils, plates, towels, sheets, etc. The beds are usually twin to full size. You will be living in a shared house with your own room. It has a full kitchen and on the main floor and laundry room in the basement (you will have to supply your own soap). If you choose you can either cook your own food or use our cafeteria with a 10% discount for staff or one of our many restaurants here in Cooperstown. There is a Price Chopper food store in walking distance of roughly a mile away.
Do we need to bring our own scrubs?
Students are provided with three credits for scrubs. Once you arrive you will be given more details on how to access your scrubs.
What is the credentialing process prior to starting at Bassett?
Prior to your clerkship at Bassett, you should receive an email from the Bassett coordinator outlining this process. It is important that the requested documents are complete before leaving NYC. Incomplete paperwork will delay your start. The ‘Dean’s Certification form’ can be processed by the office of Medical Education in VEC 1103. These forms will be sent you in an email several weeks before the start of your clerkship.
