General Info: Types of Electives
VP&S students have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of electives during their D&I phase. There are also options for global health electives, self-arranged preceptorships, as well as self-arranged research electives.
- Subinternship (clinical): Student functions as part of a team on a teaching service with responsibilities simulating the intern experience.
- Consult (clinical): Student provides consultation to other hospital services with a team of residents, fellows and attendings who supervise the student.
- Preceptorship (clinical): Student works with one faculty member over one month, performing and/or observing all the duties of the faculty member.
- Other/Away (clinical): Other clinical electives offered by department; R4R (counts as clinical); clinical away electives.
- Research (nonclinical): Student works directly with one or more faculty members on a research topic.
- Project- and Lecture-Based (nonclinical): Student develops a final project based on a specific topic and may attend some related lectures.
- Away (nonclinical): Nonclinical electives available at other institutions.
